The Answers:

General:

Are all herbs useful to Empaths?
Short Answer:  No.  If it causes itching and makes you feel better, though, it is.
Long Answer:  In the Empath guild library, there is a book titled 'Healing Reagents'.  This book lists all the known herbs that heal various body parts.  These are the same herbs that are sold in shops like the Crossing Herbalist, and from the midwife in Tiger Clan. These herbs are all proven to work.  However, some people think that certain other herbs such as lavender, red and blue flowers, various apples, sage, chamomile, and maybe others, also affect the body.  Lavender definitely does NOT have any healing properties now, though it's used in a cleric ritual.  After eating a herb, you do not feel any itching or improvement of your wounds, then you either had no wounds that could be healed by that particular herb or the herb does not have any healing properties.  It used to be that useful herbs would TINGLE when you ate them, but now the system is a bit more realistic.  You only know that an herb is working when you feel it working, and it doesn't magically make you "tingle" when you take a bite.  Rather, it needs a moment to begin taking effect.

Abilities:

How and when can I learn Manipulate?
Short Answer:  At or above 20th circle and with 100 ranks of Empathy.
Long Answer:  Although you'll be ready to learn Manipulate shortly after 20th circle, you'll still have to find yourself a 40th+ circle Empath to teach it to you by example.  For more information about using Manipulate, visit the Abilities page.

Combat:

Can Battle Empaths hunt?
Short Answer:  They can't.
Long Answer:  At 30th circle, one of the titles an Empath can choose is 'Battle Empath'.  This does not mean that an Empath is allowed to attack anything without getting empathic shock.  More often, it's used by the Empath to signify that they've spent time training their defenses, and are able to survive many places in the field on their own.

Can Empaths brawl?
Short Answer:  Yes, they can brawl using non-harmful maneuvers.
Long Answer:  The biggest limitation on the Empath guild is that we can't attack things and hunt for ourselves, or we'll get empathic shock.  However, brawling offers several safe defensive-type maneuvers, which don't cause any harm to a critter or person, and we can use these all we want while brawling.  They're listed under BRAWL HELP, and include CIRCLE, BOB, WEAVE, GRAPPLE, SHOVE, and TACKLE.

Healing:

Can acid be healed?
Short Answer:  It can't.
Long Answer:  While empaths can heal most things wrong with the body, there are a couple things they can't heal, including foreign objects lodged in the body (like arrows and bolts) and acid.  Acid has to wear off naturally, and can't be healed by Empaths or diluted by liquid.  However, Empaths can monitor a patient's vitality as the acid wears off and then heal the wounds created by it.

What wounds are fatal?
Short Answer:  Head, neck, chest, abdomen, back.
Long Answer:  There are certain parts of the body that you can't live without and will cause you instant death if they're destroyed.  For a long time, these were the head, neck, chest, abdomen, and tail, and did NOT include the back.  But as of 6/26/02, GM Towint announced a complete reversal of the back and tail.  Now useless level back wounds are fatal, and tail wounds are not.  Also, if you do NOT have one of these fatal/critical wounds and your vitality is completely drained, you may fall into an unconscious dying state from which you may still return if you receive help soon enough!

Can Empaths heal themselves to death?
Short Answer:  Yes.
Long Answer:  Per GM Towint at the last Empath Guild Meeting, we actually can heal ourselves to death. While it's rare, it's possible for an Empath (or patient) to die from scar buildup caused from healing a fresh wound, NOT only from directly taking scars.  This can also happen when using herbs.  The GMs also asked that if anyone ever witnessed a situation where an Empath intentionally killed another person with scars by taking their fresh wounds, that this be brought to their attention, since it could be abused as a way to kill someone and avoid shock.

Is there a way to see our own internals?
Short Answer:  No.
Long Answer:  Though Empaths have been asking to see their own internals for some time, it doesn't appear that the GMs will ever allow it, and if they did, it probably wouldn't be available to everyone immediately.  In fact, they may feel that it would be making things a bit too easy for us, though many Empaths, after a certain point, no longer pay attention to the minor, unseen internals.  But the younger Empaths, for now and who knows how long, must rely on fellow Empaths or their own memories to keep track of their internals.

Magic:

When do Empaths get to choose spells?
Short Answer:  1st circle, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, and every third circle thereafter.
Long Answer:  Your first spell choice should always be EWH (External Wound Healing).  At 2nd and 3rd, you'll want to choose the ESH and IWH spells, in whatever order you prefer.  If you choose IWH first, remember to have herbs on hand to heal the wounds you take.   We don't get a spell at 4th circle, so you have to wait until 5th to complete your basic healing spell set with ISH (Internal Scar Healing).  See the Life Magic page for more information.

Skills and Stats:

Does stamina affect how wounds are transferred?
Short Answer:  Except for vitality, it doesn't.
Long Answer:  It's a well-known fact that your stamina VS your patient's stamina has an effect on the vitality you transfer.  If you have very low stamina, and are taking vitality from a high circle Barbarian, chances are what looks like 50% vitality loss on them could well take all your vitality to replace.  However, this does NOT apply to wounds.  Any Empath, healing any patient, with cuts and bruises, will receive cuts and bruises (on top of their other wounds).  It's been absolutely confirmed with us by former GM Loriene that this is true and will remain so.

What's Empathy and how do I learn it?
Short Answer:  Empathy is an Empath's most important skill, learned by healing others.
Long Answer:  Empathy is actually an encompassing skill that includes magically-aided healing and the perceiving of life essences.  It cannot be taught but is an Empath's most important skill, and it's required forever.  You can learn the Empathy skill by healing others, perceiving the health of an area, tending bloodworms or leeches, and manipulating creatures.
